Europe bans mercury thermomters.

The European Parliament has adopted a directive banning the sale of mercury medical thermometers. The ban should come into force during the first quarter of 2009 at the latest. The Parliament has approved the position of the 27 Member States on its second reading. Certain specialised applications, in particular in the field of medicine, are excluded from this proposal. Replacement products are not always available. Certain Member States including France have already banned mercury thermometers.
